Technical scale synthesis of 2D polymers

Main content

Figure 1
28 g of microcrystalline monomer for two-dimensional polymerization obtained in a three-step synthesis in our laboratory from cheap and commercially available starting materials without the need for problematic solvents and chromatographic purifications.

In order to explore the application potential of 2D polymers it is of utmost importance to make these novel materials available on a large scale. This project is directed towards streamlining the synthesis of a particular monomer under all aspects of relevance for a technical realization. This has now been accomplished together with Polymaterials AG, Kaufbeuren, Germany, so that this monomer (M. Kory 2014, Nat. Chem.) can be technically produced in crystalline form. Simple irradiation of the obtained crystals then affords single crystals composed of stacks of 2D polymers.
